Types of UK gambling companies
Gambling companies in the UK are grouped by the type of licence they hold. Most specialise in one area, though the biggest companies hold several licences and have products available utilising all of the licences.
| Company type | Licence held | What it covers | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casino | Remote casino | Slots, table games, live dealer | Evoke plc (888casino) |
| Betting / sportsbook | Remote betting | Sports and pool betting | Entain plc (Ladbrokes, Coral) |
| Bingo | Remote bingo | Online and hall bingo | Entain plc (Gala Bingo) |
| Lottery | Separate framework | The National Lottery | Allwyn |
Sister Sites
When one gambling company has many brands under a single licence, we call those related brands sister sites. Usually, the sister brands don’t share only the licence. They share the infrastructure and architecture behind their gambling apps.
Many players who are interested in switching to different casinos are choosing to go for a similar brand in the same group because of the shared behind-the-scenes infrastructure and similar experience that they get because of that.
Online vs land-based companies
A remote licence covers online play, while a non-remote licence covers physical betting shops and land-based casinos. No single licence covers both, so a company that does both holds one of each.
The biggest gambling companies in the UK:
Here is a list of the biggest and best-known gambling companies operating in the UK. Between them, they own most of the betting and casino brands we have probably all heard of.

#4 – Bet365

The biggest UK gambling company by revenue, taking around £4bn a year from its Stoke-on-Trent base. Founded in 2000, it’s an interesting and unusual thing for the industry: the company runs a single brand rather than a network, so Bet365 has no sister sites.

UKGC licences granted and lost over the years
The results we grabbed and investigated from the UKGC registry show that the total number of licences given out to casino operators is consolidating, not growing. UK gambling’s total Gross Gambling Yield hit £16.8 billion for the year to March 2025, up 7.3% on the year before, but the number of individual operators is trending the other way.

Bojan BukvicHow we keep this list updated
We pull this data directly from the UKGC’s public register every day: new licences, surrendered licences, and licence category changes. We track operator name, trading name(s), licence number, licence status, and every live brand we can confirm is operating under that licence. When a brand goes dark or a licence is revoked, we remove it within 24 hours of the register updating, not whenever we next get around to it.
Frequently asked questions about gambling companies in UK
What are the biggest gambling companies in the UK
By revenue, the biggest gambling companies active in the UK are Flutter, Entain, bet365 and Evoke. Flutter, the owner of Paddy Power, Betfair and Sky Bet, is the largest by far. London-based Entain, which runs Ladbrokes, Coral and Gala, is the biggest UK-headquartered group. bet365 is the biggest privately owned company, and Evoke owns William Hill and 888.
How many gambling companies are licensed in the UK?
We track 80+ UKGC-licensed companies that run online casino, betting or bingo sites for UK players. The Gambling Commission licenses many more businesses in total, including betting shops, arcades and lotteries. These are the companies behind the sites you’re most likely to play at.
How do I check if a casino is UKGC licensed?
Scroll to the footer of the casino’s website and look for the UKGC logo with a licence number next to it. You can also use our sister site search tool to see the exact licence behind any brand. Then check that number on the Gambling Commission’s public register to confirm it’s active and lists the website you’re on. If the name, number or status doesn’t match, don’t deposit.
What happens when an gambling company loses its licence?
It must stop offering gambling to players in Great Britain. A revoked licence means the Gambling Commission forced the company out, while a surrendered licence means it chose to leave. Either way, withdraw your balance as soon as you hear about it. Online casinos must keep your money separate from their own, but unless their terms say “medium” or “high” protection, it isn’t protected if the company goes bust.
Which UK gambling company owns the most brands?
ProgressPlay has the most sites registered under one licence, but Entain runs the most active brands you’ll know. ProgressPlay provides ready-made casino sites for other businesses, so its licence record lists well over 100 websites, though only a fraction are live at any time. Entain runs 12 active UK brands, including Ladbrokes, Coral, bwin, Gala and Foxy Bingo.
What company owns bet365?
bet365 is owned by bet365 Group Limited, a private company controlled by the Coates family. Denise Coates founded it in Stoke-on-Trent in 2000 and is the majority shareholder. bet365 runs a single brand rather than a network of sites, so it has no sister sites. You can see how it performs in our bet365 review.
How many UK gambling sites are there?
We track 500+ active gambling sites run by 80+ UKGC-licensed companies. The Gambling Commission’s register lists far more website addresses than that, because many companies register spare or inactive domains. Our count only includes the sites that are live and taking players. Many of them are sister sites that share the same owner.
Who owns Betfair?
Betfair is owned by Flutter Entertainment, the world’s largest online betting company. Betfair merged with Paddy Power in 2016, and the combined company renamed itself Flutter in 2019. Flutter also owns Sky Bet, tombola and FanDuel in the US.
